Lussi Langnatt

13th of December was Solstice in the Julian calendar: Lussi Langnatt /Lussinatta (Lussi Long night).

It was a dark and long night, and not least a mysterious and magical night. There were many strange things that could happen. Some people believed that the horns on the cows turned the wrong way or were spinning around very fast. They also thought that the animals could talk to each other this night. The animals had to bite and chew their food twice because they got so hungry this long night. Then the cow would say: "Lussinatt is long!" And the ram replied: "She's as long as two."

It was also a lot of scary and creepy things tied to Lussinatta. No one could to go out in the evening, and at least not at night. Not even to go to the storehouse to pick up a lefse (gridle cake). Both the people and the animals at the farm had to stay indoors, so they would not be taken by Lussiferda.

Lussiferda was a horde of trolls, gnomes, wood nymphs and underworld creatures, led by the demon-like Lussi. (According to the folklore Lussi was Ask's (Ash's) first wife and the mother of all underworld creatures. Similar to Lilith in the Jewish folklore.) Lussiferda came flying at night on fire-glowing horses. The people and animals being outside was taken by the horde, often very far away, before being let back down on the ground again.  Lights were burning all night to keep the trolls away, and someone in the house had to stay awake at all time.

Lussi was not just a demon-like creature that flew around to scare. She also checked that the preparations for Jól was finished. On a farm there was a lot to be done before Jól. All the spinning of yarn and graining grains, brewing beer, slaughtering and baking had to be finished. Now Jól began, and at Solstice she would shout loudly down the smoke vent or the chimney pipe:

Inkje brygga inkje baka, inkje store eldar hava.   (No brewing, no baking, no big fires!)

If the people in at the farm did not follow this rule, she would punish them by breaking off the top of the chimney.

When the Gregorian calendar took over in the 1700s, the 13th December was kept as the date of Lussi Langnatt and the Feast of Saint Lucy.
