Glæðileg jól!
In the majority of Europe, the old pagan mid winter celebrations has been given a christian name (Christ mas, Weih nacht, Noël (as in birth) and so on), but in Scandinavia the season has retained its old Germanic name jul. (English has preserved Yuletide as an archaic form.)
It is a bit uncertain what the word jul (jól / jólablot / midwinter blot / torreblot / hökunótt) means. It is a plural word and it indicates that there have been names of a number of celebrations. In other words: A party period.
The word jul is first mentioned in Torbjørn Hornklove's quad Haraldskvede, which dates from the 900's. There he writes about «drekka jól» (meaning drinking jul). The saga tells about how people should come together to brew beer and to drink in the memory and honor of the gods. This would promote growth and peace.
In other words, it is related to a pagan custom when you
in Denmark say Glædelig jul,
in Finland say Hyvää joulua,
in Iceland say Gleðileg jól
and in Sweden and Norway say God jul.
