The wolf has swallowed the sun, the night is falling and Jol is celebrated in the longhouses.

Julaften

Christmas Eve is the highlight of Norwegian Christmas celebration. The first part of the day is often used for panic-like shopping of the last Christmas gifts, or for a quiet time in church. At five o'clock, Christmas is called in with church bells, and most people start their Christmas dinner at home or with relatives, often with the sound of the choir Sølvguttene coming from the TV. The Christmas gifts are already been stacked under the Christmas tree, and are unwrapped during the evening.

Giving Christmas presents is an old pagan custom in Norway, but it was not the children who was rewarded with gifts originally. It was the nobles who gave Jól gifts, perhaps to create new and confirm old alliances. The nobles also gave Jól gifts to their minions. According to Snorri, Eirik Jarl started at the beginning of the 11th century to follow the noble's custom to give the minions their Jólagjöf (Christmas gift) on eighth day Christmas. Similarly, one can read in several sagas that the king gave Christmas gifts, usually some form of a precious cloak, to the respective hero in the saga.

Of course, not everyone in Norway today is celebrating Christmas, but most people follow these traditions to a greater or lesser extent. Many people with an immigrant background also celebrate Christmas in their own way, with elements of the Norwegian Christmas celebration. As this is a typical home evening, most restaurants and nightclubs are closed on Jól Eve and it is quiet in the streets.

A huge Thank You to everyone who has followed this Julekalender and have made it fun to continue to search for more material of our vikings and ancient traditions. I have learned so much, and I hope you have enjoyed the quizes as much as I have.

Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful holiday celebration and a prosperous new year!

God Jól!

Love,

Lisbeth M.
