The drinking rituals of Jul
In everyday life, the vikings quenched the thirst with thin beer, which even the children tolerated. The strong and more tasty brew was spared for important occasions, especially Jul. In addition to beer, the invited guests also drank mash that was made from honey, water and spices.
The guests drank tight and became full, but they did it with great ceremony. At least in the beginning, while still remembering that they participated in a blot - a ritual where people made contact with gods.
The vikings believed Odin and the other gods needed extra powers to drive away the cold and the evil winter. The people could convey this strength by tribute, so the guests drank to the glory of the gods.
First the bowls were called out by the host, and the first cheer was always dedicated to Odin, the king of the gods. Everyone in the hall emptied their cups for "victory and power," and then Jul could begin.
The next bowl was for Njord, the god of the sea, who was to fill the ocean with fish and secure seafarers a safe sail.
Then the company drank for the fertility god, Frøy, with wishes for "years and peace" - that is, about a long life, prosperity and happiness. Frøy made sure the plants began to germinate and grow after winter, and the vikings considered him the most important thing during Jul.
At that point, the effect of the strong beer began to make itself felt, and now the actual value was in focus. Very often the next bowl therefor was dedicated to Brage (Bragi) the god of bards (and the master chef of Vallhall) so that the entertainment should be secured in the three days and nights.
When the most significant gods were remembered, the drunken Norsemen in the hall began to propose memory counters for people who had gone away during the year. Only the imagination set limits to what name the company was cheering for.
It's not certain how long the nightly guild was going on, and if the guests only fell down one by one or if the host at one time sent his drunk friends to bed. But next day it was "back on again" for everyone.
