Nordic Feast
The Vikings were mostly farmers and self-sufficient, and the household had to be well planned and adapted to the seasons. And not at least, it was the local conditions that decided what was on the menu. The lay about Harbard and Tor describes a typical Viking meal:
Tor tries to persuade the ferryman Harbard (Odin in disguise) to bring him dry over a strait. "Ferry me over the strait, and I'll feed you tomorrow. I have a food basket on my back, never was the food better. I ate at home peacefully before I left, herring and oats, so I'm still satisfied."
Pork and fish, and especially herring, can be found at most Christmas table in the whole of the Nordic region, but even though the Christmas menues in the Nordic countries have some common features, they vary quite a lot from country to country, and area to area.
What is first and foremost common is that there should be generously amounts. There should be enough food and drink for everyone, and it should be fatty food, enough drinks, Jul beer and lots of sweets. So it was in the Viking era, and so is it still today.
